The Broads Authority is extending an offer of up to £40,000 for a proficient drone operator to undertake a meticulous survey of deer populations across the Norfolk Broads. This role has emerged as part of a broader initiative to assess the ecological impact of deer foraging in the region, which has sparked concerns about environmental degradation.
The appointed individual will be tasked with executing an annual survey aimed at documenting the presence and movements of red deer, muntjac, and Chinese water deer within the area. This position, currently open for tender, requires extensive exploration of the waterways to identify and monitor these mammals.
A previous survey, conducted earlier this year, is set to be replicated in March 2025. These nocturnal and dawn-time assessments are strategically timed to align with peak deer activity periods, ensuring accurate data collection.
The burgeoning deer population in the UK, attributed to the absence of natural predators, has necessitated such measures. The findings from these surveys will serve to guide efforts in population management, ultimately safeguarding arable lands, woodlands, reed beds, and even public safety, as rising deer numbers heighten the risk of road incidents.
Deer grazing is notorious for its ecological and economic ramifications. Consuming upwards of 7kg of vegetation daily, they pose a threat to woodlands, crops, and ornamental gardens. Additionally, their feeding habits disrupt the biodiversity of the Broads, diminishing resources vital to birds, insects, and native mammals.
The 2024 survey identified a staggering 4,452 deer across a 203 km² radius, with Chinese water deer accounting for the largest share at 1,997 individuals. This density underscores the urgency of addressing their proliferation.
