On the southern Norfolk Broads, a boat crash at the Reedham swing bridge caused widespread travel disruption on the Norfolk Broads today, which also affected train services operating on the Norwich to Lowestoft line.
Greater Anglia trains were cancelled or diverted via Great Yarmouth because the incident left the vessel wedged under the bridge. This also disrupted services at Haddiscoe, Somerleyton and Oulton Broad North during the repairs.
A spokesperson for Greater Anglia said:
"Network Rail response teams are investigating the incident and assessing any damage to the railway. We’re also monitoring the water levels, as the passing high tide may help free the boat as it recedes."
In the meantime, local bus services provided an alternative for travellers trying to avoid major delays.
The bridge was finally cleared at about 4 PM to allow the resumption of normal services, restoring sanity in this region's transport network.
