Approval for 27 Additional Residences in Reedham Sparks Local Disquiet.
A tranquil estate within the Broads is set to undergo significant expansion after Broadland Council sanctioned the construction of 27 new homes, much to the chagrin of nearby residents. The council’s decision to extend Barn Owl Close in Reedham has ignited a firestorm of controversy among locals, many of whom have vehemently opposed the plans, fearing the erosion of their village’s rural charm.
The approved development, spearheaded by Badger Building, is poised to nearly double the size of the current estate, which was established only a few years ago. However, residents who initially bought into the peaceful enclave are now expressing their discontent, with some even threatening to relocate in the wake of the council’s decision.
Mark Smith, a resident of Barn Owl Close, voiced his dismay: "When I purchased my home, I believed I was moving into a secluded, small-scale development. We were never informed that this was merely the first phase of a much larger expansion. Now, we're left grappling with the unknown, apprehensive about what lies ahead as Reedham faces the threat of losing its rural essence."
Smith’s concerns echo those of many within the community, who fear that Reedham, with its scant infrastructure, will be overwhelmed by the influx of new homes, potentially transforming it into a more urbanized settlement. They believe the quiet, idyllic nature of Barn Owl Close stands on the brink of being overtaken by a sprawling residential complex.
The developers first submitted their proposal back in 2022, including provisions for a children’s play area and a new pathway that would weave through the expanded estate. Despite widespread opposition from the villagers—many of whom are worried about the strain this would place on Reedham’s modest population of 1,200—the plans were given the go-ahead.
Eleanor Laming, the Green Party councillor for Brundall, acknowledged the concerns raised by her constituents: "There have been a number of reservations about this site, with numerous objections coming from residents. While the proposal isn’t without its flaws, none of the consultees flagged any significant or insurmountable issues."
In the end, the council’s vote was unanimous, giving the green light to the additional 27 homes, which will bring the total number of houses in Barn Owl Close to 51. Despite the community’s objections, the development is set to proceed, leaving residents to contend with the realities of a rapidly changing landscape.
