I love the derivation of words more than the definitions.
We have al heard this one so many times but personally I never looked into it before.
Legend has it...no that sounds crap.
Bristol had an enormous tidal range 13 metres which in old terminology is 43 feet. I use the word, 'had' as apparently it has a floating harbour nowadays. Anyway, the ships would ground out in the port of Bristol at low tide causing them to lean to one side because of the keels. This would ultimately cause items to shift about the decks causing chaos with the cargo and potentially spoiling it.
So there you have it. :D
