Stalham Staithe Gets Partial Makeover

Post by Dances With Otters » November 1st, 2018, 2:00 pm

I write partial, as I suspect it is not going to get the full love and attention it so deserves, especially being such a historic staithe and wholly underrated in my opinion.

Anyway, the end that is currently being revamped is the part opposite Toby Cox marine engineers and also opposite the house. It is the part of the bank that had collapsed in the river, possibly quite some time ago.

I don't anticipate it to better the boating experience as such, however, it is likely to help stop the road from falling into the river, as it clearly aims to do at some point.

Loads of fresh metal steel sheet interlocking metal piling has been driven in, and it is quite a novelty to see what that metal actually looks like new, as elsewhere on the Norfolk Broads it is the same rust brown.

Let's hope this is the start of good new things for this wonderful staithe. :D

Far from it.
The locals will tell you it is owned by Broadlands but that is not the case at all from what I can determine.
A land regsitry check was done a good few years ago and it turned up negative.
The only way any owner can currently claim ownership is through adverse possession and nobody has done that.
I suspect the recent works are more aimed at securing the road's viability, as it was not too far off sliding into the river.

Well, the road is the highways agency's responsibilty I was told but if I remember correctly they are responsible for 'A' roads and motorways. However, I honestly don't know, so if I was to hazard a guess.....then I would say Stalham council.

The Highways Agency is only responsible for main A roads ie A11 A47 etc not A12

A lot of the silt and sludge has been dug out and as it is on the road, I suspect it is going to be used for filling the gap between the road and new pilings.
Never know, might even be able to moor up there and I wonder when was the last time that was possible?
Stalham Staithe is an excellent mooring and a real historic one at that.
In the right hands with some modifications to make it more accessible, it could be a really beneficial investment for the little town of Stalham.
