Dredging The Thurne

The Broads Authority UK have announced their plans to extend dredging operations on the Upper River Thurne, from 18 November 2021 until 25 February 2022.
According to the Broads Authority, the dredging site includes the upstream end of the River Thurne, from Hickling Broad to Somerton Staithe.

The maintenance dredging will use floating pontoons as well as other essential vessels.

Navigation will remain open.

Material sourced from dredging will be reused if possible, such as bank restoration, or by land spreading across local agricultural land.

This year, the Broads Authority took ownership of a new 20 tonne, 12 metre long reach JCB excavator that replaced an older machine purchased in 2010.

Mid-April onwards this machine is being largely used for Norfolk Broads’ dredging.
