This afternoon a young fisherman snared a swan in his fishing lines and struggled to pull the powerful bird to the bank to free it.
He called out for assistance and I ran over to help.
By the time we were able to free the bird, it had almost lost consciousness and it's head was barely above the water.
Luckily, it was able to revive itself and came back to life.
The problem was that the fishing line was wrapped around its neck and we were initially unable to free it because it had 3 barbed hooks.
The reason I raise this is because if the fisherman had used barb free hooks, then it would have been incredibly easier to release the bird from its suffering and imminent suffocation.
I wonder why barb free hooks are not insisted upon for this reason and also the fact that all the fish caught are going to be released?
This means that the fish won't have to have a barbed hook extracted from itself.
A close one
