2023 Boating Season Was Disastrous

Norfolk Broads Boat Hire Industry Faces Uncertain Future Amid Toll Hikes and Weather Woes

*The Norfolk Broads' hire boat sector is in jeopardy due to a combination of adverse factors, including inclement weather and controversial toll increases.*

In a recent gathering, prominent figures from the Broads Authority (BA) have sounded the alarm for the hire boat industry's future on the Norfolk Broads. They highlighted a trifecta of challenges, encompassing uncooperative weather conditions, the rising cost of living, and contentious toll hikes, all of which have dealt a severe blow to several boating enterprises.

Daniel Thwaite, a member of the authority's navigation committee and also the financial director of Barnes Brinkcraft, expressed his concern by stating, "The hire boat industry has endured an appalling season, not just a mildly disappointing one, but truly dreadful."

While adverse weather conditions have undoubtedly played a role in this predicament, members of the authority also deliberated on the repercussions of escalating prices, which have dissuaded potential holidaymakers from choosing the Norfolk Broads as their destination. Moreover, they discussed the impact of the BA's decision to increase tolls on the hire boat industry.

Earlier this year, boat tolls witnessed a 13% surge, resulting in an additional cost of over £200 for those hiring large vessels on a weekly basis. This increment drew vehement criticism from both private boat owners and hire enterprises alike.

During the meeting, it was disclosed that the BA's income from tolls had fallen below expectations, leaving a budgetary shortfall of approximately £70,000.

In response to concerns that the toll increase may have driven people away from the waterways, BA's Chief Executive, John Packman, refuted these claims, stating, "I don't believe the toll increase or the lifting of larger boats out of the water are the primary factors. Our research indicates that it is the smaller, private boats that have been affected more, and it is challenging to pinpoint the exact cause, but I suspect it has more to do with the inclement weather than any other factor."

Mr. Packman conceded that it had not been a prosperous year for hire boat firms, attributing the downturn to the capricious weather conditions. He also mentioned that there would be further discussions regarding tolls for the upcoming year, slated for October.
