Stalham...A Town Reportedly In Decline.

Post by Miles »

Whilst reading news articles declaring that the town of Stalham was in a debacle, I could not help but wonder why obvious issues have not been addressed.

All towns have changed over the past years with the advent of the internet, it is inevitable. What hasn't changed is the town's infrastructure, it's designed for failure, not progression.

Tesco now dominates the town and it is immediately obvious that even with free parking for the town for 3 hours, the roads and the supermarket car park can not cope with the level of cars.

Firstly, the two idiotic small roundabouts at the bottom of the high street should be ripped up. Not only are they ineffective as roundabouts but they are unnecessary. The high street should be returned to two-way traffic and where the current mini roundabouts are should be quite simply two T-junctions....which might also motivate some people to make use of their car indicators which appear as an optional extra on cars these days.

Where the high street road and the Tesco road meet the A149, there should be large roundabouts which will mitigate the amount of car crashes that occur in these areas.

The current wasteland behind the library should be a designated free parking spot for cars and the current car park perhaps should not be used at nighttime by the Royal Mail vehicles.

The communication links for the town of Stalham are horrendous with public transport that stems out of the dark ages making it impossible for anyone to make use of public transport out of office hours. So if somebody does not have a car then they can not get out of Norwich or North Walsham back home after a day's work. The simple solution to that is to create a designated cycle path stretching from Stalham to Hoveton... therefore enabling access to the nearest railway station. A pathway already exists towards Smallburgh. Access to Hoveton especially by an electric bike would be within most people's grasp and would also encourage people to bike to the town. North Walsham can already be accessed by bike on the old railway line.

The beautiful Stalham Staithe with its abundance of marine activities is cut off by the A149....why not install a zebra crossing or walkway tunnel under the road.

With the sheer amount of road traffic that passes by Stalham daily, I find it hard to fathom why it is not a thriving village even more so in the high season.
In its current state with stupid roundabouts, a one-way system, not enough parking and terrible communication links with other towns, is it any wonder that many businesses and even people are cut off and unable to thrive?
