Winter Boating ⛵
What a pleasure
Winter Boating ⛵
I must confess we do not seem to get winters quite like I remember in the 70's and 80's.
However, this year so far has been the best one I have experienced. Okay, there has been some gales and flooding and possibly still some cold spells to come but yesterday was like a spring day. The sun shone through a blue sky all day and if one had been physically busy, a t-shirt would have been suffice.
I have seen a big increase in winter boating on the north Broads which is awesome.
What a great winter so far.

Glad to hear you are enjoying life even though the weather can be rough at times.
I'm old enough
to remember the winter of 1963, ok I was only a kid. My Dad was the Duckhams Oil rep and did a lot of business on the Norfolk Broads and I used go with him on his calls quite often. One day we were in Horning and watching the frozen river from a boat yard that I cannot remember the name of now, but was close to the sailing club and just up river. The men started daring one another to go onto the ice, I can remember making a slide and it was surprisingly smooth! Upping the ante, It didn't take long for one of them to drive a Land Rover onto the ice quickly followed by my Dad in his company Morris Oxford. Can't imagine that happening today can you? What would "elf n safety" say?
That memory stays with me and I wish I had some photos, but of course cameras were more expensive to operate then than they are now.
This year we haven't winterised Bluebell and have enjoyed some great days out - cold, but big bright blue skies. Lovely.

I did hear about a car driving from Reedham once to Norwich.
Didn't believe it at first but a few old timers validate it at times and I have seen a photo of the 60's where the whole of Reedham was frozen and we all know what the water flows like there.

Hi there,
Really nice to hear from folks antipodean.
People sometimes think we are all a bit nuts being out in the winter but it really is a wonderful time to be out. Not just because it's quiet but because the whole place changes. The Norfolk Broads is very different to what it was many years ago and that includes centuries back. When you are out in the winter, with a little imagination you can really feel the ghosts of the past, personally I love it.
I think that particular wave you refer to it captures that essence a little and that is why I used it.
