I may be wrong but I have always been lead to believe that as a lot of commands on the old sailing ships were done with whistles. Somebody whistling a tune could confuse things somewhat. As time went on it became a superstition.

That is where a private boat has put a sign telling people not to. The private boat with the sign is a bit further up towards the staithe from the fork in the river referred to. I can understand the boat owners concern about being hit by out of control boats but he has no right to put up misleading...

Yes, enough is enough. A few years ago at Ludham Bridge I had my boat filled with choking diesel fumes by an inconsiderate hirer apparently so they could have a shower.
